An Iowa City man was taken into custody after an argument with his live-in girlfriend got physical and he allegedly choked her to unconsciousness.
According to arrest reports, 35-year-old Zachary Young and the woman, who share custody of two children, began arguing at about 3:35pm Wednesday in their South 7th avenue residence. The argument escalated into a pushing match, and the woman allegedly received minor cuts to her elbow and knuckle.
Young is accused of placing his hands around the woman’s neck, causing her to lose consciousness. He reportedly admitted to being in an argument when questioned by officers.
Young was taken into custody and charged with domestic abuse assault impeding airflow and domestic abuse assault second offense. If convicted on both charges, Young could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
