An Iowa City man who has found sleeping in someone else’s vehicle allegedly tried to make his getaway by putting his own keys in the car’s ignition.

According to police, 21-year-old Samuel Abba of Bowery Street was discovered in the vehicle on the 400 block of South Gilbert Street Tuesday at about 2:15am. The reporting party asked Abba to exit the vehicle, but he reportedly refused, and attempted to put his keys in the vehicle’s ignition.

Officers called to the scene observed that Abba had bloodshot watery eyes, poor balance, slurred speech and a strong odor of ingested alcohol.

Abba allegedly had no ID on him and refused to give officers his name or address. He was later identified from an in-house booking photo.  A check of court records indicates he was arrested for an OWI, operating a vehicle without registration, and drug possession in February of 2017 and was also charged with bringing contraband into a correctional institution the same time.

Abba was charged with public intoxication and interference with official acts and could be sentenced to 60 days in jail if convicted on both counts.
