Two Iowa City men were arrested after allegedly being caught in the act during a burglary early Monday morning.
Police were called to the 1500 block of Dickenson Lane for a possible burglary in progress at approximately 1:45am, and found 28-year-old Timothy Heath of Village Farm Court and 31-year-old Dustin Haigh of Sycamore Street in the back yard of a residence without permission. The two were allegedly in possession of a crowbar, flashlights, headlights, and two-way radios.
A search of Haigh’s backpack subsequent to arrest turned up a lock picking kit. During the investigation, a vehicle burglary was reported in the same area. Property from that offense was reportedly found on Haigh after a cellphone taken in that alleged burglary was found ringing in the backpack. A matching wallet/case and a woman’s wallet were also recovered. The victims identified the property as theirs by their IDs within.
Heath was also searched and a prescription bottle containing crystal meth, alprazolam, clonazepam and methylphenidate tablets was discovered. The prescription on the bottle was in Heath’s name but not for any of the substances allegedly found inside. A small quantity of marijuana was found in the backpack as well.
The two were arrested. Haigh was charged with 3rd degree Burglary, 3rd degree Theft, possession of burglar’s tools and Trespass. He could be sentenced to over six years in prison if convicted on all charges.
Heath was charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance 3rd or subsequent offense, trespass, unlawful possession of a prescription drug, possession of burglar’s tools, 3rd degree Burglary, and possession of marijuana 3rd or subsequent. If convicted of all charges, Heath could be sentenced to a prison term exceeding 25 years.
