An Iowa City man faces charges that he attacked his ex while she was trying to move out of the couple’s apartment.
Iowa City Police say the woman was moving her belongings out of an Iowa Avenue apartment she shared with 35-year-old Gregory Welch just after 7:15pm on December 30th when the incident happened. Welch and the woman had been in an intimate relationship on and off for about two months, and had lived together for about a month.
The woman was retrieving her belongings from the apartment when she received a call from a male. Police say that’s when Welch became enraged and pushed the woman, cornering her so she couldn’t leave. He allegedly continued pushing and harassing her as she tried calling 9-1-1. Police say at one point she tried dashing past Welch, but he grabbed her by the arms and slammed her into a television and other furniture. The woman suffered cuts, bruising and bleeding to various parts of her body.
Welch was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault – 3rd or Subsequent Offense and False Imprisonment. If convicted, he faces a maximum of six years in prison.
