A Christmas Eve dispute among neighbors led to the arrest of an Iowa City man after he repeatedly called 9-1-1.

Iowa City Police were called to 1131 3rd Avenue just before 7:30pm on December 24th after 54-year-old Clinton Wright reported a break-in to his home. Another witness also called 9-1-1 to report that Wright had tried breaking into his apartment moments earlier.

Arriving officers interviewed the witness, then found Wright outside on the street showing multiple signs of intoxication. Wright admitted to drinking, and police say he repeated himself several times in what they describe as “an incoherent manner not typical of a sober individual.” After taking a report from Wright, officers told him to stay inside for the evening.

The same officers returned to the residence 20 minutes later after Wright called 9-1-1 to complain about the handling of the first incident. Wright was advised that a report had been taken and to stay inside and not call 9-1-1 again unless it was an actual emergency.

Wright called 9-1-1 a third time ten minutes later to complain about the same thing. He was found in his driveway and placed under arrest for Misuse of 9-1-1 and Public Intoxication. Once in handcuffs, Wright allegedly flexed against officers and resisted arrest. Police say he also resisted officers as he was being placed into the squad car and was being booked into the Johnson County Jail. Wright now faces an additional charge of Interference with Official Acts.

Wright pleaded guilty to all charges and was fined $380.
