Quarterback Nate Stanley hit Tyrone Tracy with a 50-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, and it was all the Iowa Hawkeyes needed, as the defense kept Northwestern from scoring in a 20-0 shutout at Ryan Field in Evanston Saturday.
Iowa had a slight edge in possession time, at 33 ½ minutes to the Wildcats 26 ½, but they had 100 yards more total offense at the end.
The Hawkeyes scored in each quarter.
Keith Duncan hit a 40 yard field goal to make it 10-0 in the second quarter; Iowa continued the scoring in the third with a 1-yard run by Mekhi Sargent. Duncan added a 28-yarder in the fourth.
Stanley was 12 for 26 for 179 yards, the TD pass and no interceptions.
The Hawkeye defense held Northwestern to just 64 rushing yards on 35 attempts.
After a bye week, Iowa travels to Madison for a big game against Wisconsin November 9th. Saturday’s win makes the team bowl eligible for the 18th time in the last 19 years.
