An 11-year-old boy is being credited with alerting sleeping neighbors to a Coralville apartment fire Thursday.

According to the city’s fire department, they responded to an apartment fire at 948 Boston Way at about 6pm. Damage sustained was contained to the apartment of origin, with the remainder of the units suffering some light smoke damage. The fire was extinguished about 10 minutes after firefighters’ arrival.

Several occupants were on scene at the time of the fire and were able to get out safely under their own power, but two occupants who were sleeping at the time were alerted by an 11-year-old neighbor. He smelled smoke in the unit across the hall and ran and yelled into the unit to wake the occupants. He then had his mother call 911 and made sure all the occupants had evacuated the building.

The two displaced occupants were assisted by the Red Cross. The cause of the fire was determined to be unattended cooking. Damage was estimated to be $10,000.
