A perennial candidate for Johnson County sheriff is facing a theft charge.

Iowa City Police say 65-year-old Frank Cummings, who is listed in arrest records as a transient, scanned and paid for $70.55 in merchandise at Ace Hardware on North Dodge Street the afternoon of October 3rd. Cummings paid by check and left the scene.

Five days later Ace received a letter from MidwestOne Bank stating Cummings had stopped payment on the check.

Cummings, who regularly campaigns for Johnson County sheriff as a write-in candidate, is charged with 5th Degree Theft.
