An Iowa City man with a history of huffing from aerosol cans has been arrested again for the third time in five days.

Iowa City Police responded to Ace Hardware on North Dodge Street just after 11:30 Saturday morning for a male huffing cans by the dumpsters. Arriving officers found 28-year-old Max Wehrle of Michael Street seated with approximately seven cans of air duster cans spread out on the ground around him, as well as one in his hands. Police say Wehrle showed signs of intoxication, admitted he had an addiction, and asked to be taken to jail.

He was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication.

It was Wehrle’s third huffing-related arrest within the span of five days. He was arrested for Public Intox at Staples on South Riverside Drive just before 8pm on October 17th. Investigators say they observed Wehrle behind the building using inhalants. He showed signs of being impaired and admitted to huffing.

The ICPD was called to Walmart on Highway 1 West two days earlier for Wehrle huffing cans inside the bottle return room. Wehrle allegedly attempted to flee from arriving officers. It was also discovered that he had allegedly stolen $22.63 in merchandise.

Wehrle had been issued a criminal trespass warning for Walmart for previously huffing on the property. He was charged with 3rd Degree Theft, Simulated Public Intoxication and 1st Offense Trespassing. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in prison.
