A new Suffolk University/USA Today poll released this weekend shows a three-way race among Democratic presidential candidates in Iowa, with Pete Buttegieg now within striking distance of frontrunners Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren.
The national paper reports that the poll was taken last Wednesday through Friday among 500 likely Democratic caucus goers. It shows Biden faltering after last week’s debate, but still ahead of Elizabeth Warren by an 18-17 percent margin. The South Bend Indiana mayor is within striking distance now, at 13 percent.
Kamala Harris, who was in second place when the poll was taken in June, has dropped to just 6 percent. Vermont senator Bernie Sanders is at 9 percent.
Meanwhile, all the campaigning and national debates have done nothing but confuse Iowans. The number of undecided voters has spiked to 29 percent, up from just 21 percent in June. And of those who have picked their candidate, nearly two-thirds of them say they might change their minds before they caucus in February.
Warren and Buttegieg lead the field as second choice of those polled, with Warren at 22% and Buttigieg at 14%.
