A Coralville man wanted on a previous warrant was taken into custody after allegedly stealing a woman’s bicycle Monday night.

Police say 30-year-old Dustin Martin of 13th Street was discovered in the 300 block of Kirkwood Avenue in possession of a stolen bike. The bike had been reported stolen less than ten minutes prior to an officer discovering Martin in possession of it. When he saw police, Martin tried to hide the bicycle behind a building.

The woman gave a description of the bike, valued at $700, to police and it matched the bike Martin had in his possession.  He allegedly cut the chain lock to get the cycle.

Martin was on probation from a March 2019 incident when he was charged of going armed with a knife and a second drug possession charge. He failed to make payments, missed several appointments with his probation officer and failed random drug testing, causing a warrant to be issued for his arrest.

Officers discovered a bag of marijuana, two small baggies of meth, three glass pipes, and several burglar’s tools when they arrested Martin.

Martin was taken into custody and charged with 4th degree theft, 5th degree criminal mischief, possession of marijuana 3rd or subsequent, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of burglar’s tools. Adding in the previous Carrying Weapons charge, Martin could be sentenced to over eight years in prison if convicted.
