A new tentative opening date has been set for an Iowa City construction project damaged by a fire last spring.

Developer Kevin Digmann of Hodge Construction tells The Cedar Rapids Gazette that he hopes the Hieronymus Square development, at the corner of South Clinton and East Burlington Streets, will open by the end of the year.  Plans for the $41 million project call for a two tower, seven story complex with high end condos in one tower and an extended stay hotel in the other. A rooftop terrace is to connect the two buildings.

The condos were originally scheduled to open in August, but those plans were set back by a March 5th fire that gutted the work in-progress. The cause of the fire was later determined to be combustible adhesives placed too close to a propane heater. Damage is estimated at $1 million.

While the contract with the city states Hieronymus Square will open by December 31st, that date could be extended due to the circumstances. But so far, Hodge Construction has not asked for an extension.
