A Burlington man was taken into custody early Friday morning after allegedly assaulting a woman at her Iowa City apartment.

Arrest reports indicate that Kaleb Branton, who turned 21 Thursday, was having an argument with a woman in the bedroom of her apartment in the 300 block of South Madison Street at approximately 2:35am. The woman told authorities that Branton began hitting himself, then started hitting her in the face. He left, but came back, broke the woman’s bedroom door, and started hitting her again. She tried to call 911 but Branton allegedly knocked the phone out of her hands.

The woman shouted for her roommate to call 911 and she alerted police. The roommate corroborated the victim’s story.

Branton was taken into custody and charged with assault causing bodily injury, criminal mischief and obstruction of emergency communications. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 14 months in jail. A no-contact order was requested between Branton and the victim.
