This was the first home football weekend this year for the University of Iowa and the first weekend of the completed “Kinnick House”, and neighbors made their displeasure known to Iowa City Police.
Online records show the ICPD received nine complaint calls about the house over the weekend. The house, at 101 Lusk Avenue, raised controversy among its Manville Heights neighbors, who made several attempts to stop the home from being built. The Kinnick-Stadium replica is said to feature an indoor courtyard, press-box rooms, and other amenities designed for large parties, despite having no room for more than a few vehicles to park on the property.
The first call to police came in at 10:09 Friday night, with a caller complaining that an SUV was blocking the end of the street. Another call complaining about parking was made at 8:42 Saturday morning.
Seven more calls requesting extra police patrols were made throughout the day, with the final one coming at 3:35 Sunday morning.
Reed and Sandy Carlson, the owners of the home, told the Iowa City Board of Adjustment they planned to tailgate at the house during football games. But they added that the design of the house would keep them inside the walls and out of sight.
