An Iowa City woman who took umbrage with someone reporting her for leaving her dog in her vehicle last month has been arrested again for allegedly confronting the person.

Iowa City Police say 26-year-old Valerie Humphrey defied a no-contact order by returning to the Town and Campus Apartments on Arthur Street just after 1:45 Thursday afternoon and confronting an employee of the complex. The employee called police after seeing Humphrey drive onto the property. Humphrey, a former Town and Campus resident who now lists her address as Shelter House on Southgate Avenue, allegedly saw the man calling and asked if he was calling the police on her. She later admitted to being on the property and confronting the man, and was charged with a no-contact order violation.

A no-contact order was put in place between Humphrey and the employee after he called police on July 10th to report that she left her dog in a hot car. While en route to the scene, the officer was told that Humphrey was threatening to shoot the reporting party and he feared for his life.

When police arrived, Humphrey was heard saying she was going to “beat the (reporting man’s) ass.” He told police that she had threatened to shoot and kill him at least twice during the incident and believed she had the means to carry out the threat.

Humphrey was taken into custody for disorderly conduct and harassment. During the course of arrest, Humphrey allegedly continued to pull away from the officer and ignored commands to stop. The officer also reports that when he opened the door to the squad car, Humphrey hit it, causing the door to hit him in the groin.

Humphrey later voluntarily admitted to resisting arrest.

She faces a host of charges, including assault causing injury to a police officer, disorderly conduct with abusive epithets and threats, interference with official acts and first-degree harassment. If convicted on all charges, she could be sentenced to over five years in prison. A show cause hearing is set for August 22nd.
