The US Environmental Protection Agency is funding a University of Iowa project that will improve water quality, habitat, and environmental education.
The project, “Connecting Rural and Peri-urban Farmers to Demonstrate and Disseminate Innovative Nutrient and Sediment Reduction Practices,” is part of a $1.07 million EPA Farmer-to-Farmer Cooperative Agreement.
In a news release from the EPA, Administrator Andrew Wheeler says that the grants are an important part of efforts to support the country’s farmers that strengthens agriculture while protecting water resources.
The College of Engineering, Iowa Flood Center, and IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Iowa will be partnering with rural farmers and urban consumers on the project.
A ceremony honoring grant recipients took place at the Iowa State Fair Wednesday. Practical Farmers of Iowa received a grant of $936,000, while the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship received $1,150,000.
