Trying to give away a fanny pack containing varying drugs led to the arrest of a Coralville man.

An Iowa City Police officer was investigating a fight in the downtown area near Gabe’s on East Washington Street shortly after 1am Sunday when 29-year-old Gregory Jackson of 10th Street was identified as one of the possible suspects. Jackson was detained while an investigation was conducted.

The officer attempted to move him away from the large group of people who had congregated to his patrol car, but while doing so Jackson is accused of trying to give his fanny pack to someone. The officer stopped Jackson from doing so, and when he tried to remove the pack from Jackson, he tried running from the officer.

Jackson didn’t get far; with multiple officers on scene, he was grabbed up and had to be carried to the detaining officer’s patrol car. Jackson allegedly still refused to give his fanny pack up or get in the patrol car.

A search of the fanny pack contained a variety of drugs, including baggies of marijuana, ecstasy and what looked to be baggies of powder cocaine, crack, and methamphetamine. The ecstasy was in a plastic baggie that contained over 70 pills.

Jackson admitted the pills were ecstasy and volunteered that he had another pill in his pants pocket.

Jackson was taken into custody and charged with Class B and Class D Felonies for drug possession, plus Failure to Affix a Drug Stamp, and Interference With Official Acts. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over 35 years in prison.
