Allegedly trying to break into locked mailboxes with a hammer has led to charges against a Johnston man.

Iowa City Police were called to the Hilltop manufactured housing community on Waterfront Drive at 7am on June 15th for a man digging through the garbage and trying to get into the mailboxes. A witness told investigators she watched through binoculars as a man used a hammer and other tools to try and break into residents’ mailboxes.

47-year-old Michael Berkemann was found in the mail room with a hammer and other assorted tools laid out. Arrest records list Berkemann as a resident of Johnston, and not the trailer park.

Berkemann was charged with first offense Trespassing.
