A routine traffic stop has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man over the weekend.
Officers made a traffic stop on a Jeep Sunday shortly after 7pm near the corner of Wayne Avenue and Arthur Street for registration tags that had expired this past November. The stopping officer heard a loud metal object hit the floor and the occupants of the car shuffling around when he came upon the vehicle.
An eventual probable cause search was conducted on the vehicle and the occupants. One passenger, 18-year-old Anthony Hughes of Giblin Drive, had been wearing a camouflage fanny pack when the vehicle was stopped. Inside they found several live, loose federal .40 caliber ammunition rounds. Another passenger’s backpack contained two firearms; a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun with matching federal ammo, and a North American Arms .22 Magnum revolver, The Magnum was traced back as having been stolen from the Ames Police Department on September 9th, 2018.
Other occupants said that Hughes and another passenger had originally possessed the guns; Hughes alleged that he had handled the guns earlier in the day, but it was the first time he’d seen them.
Hughes was arrested and charged with Carrying Weapons and Trafficking in Stolen Weapons. If convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to a maximum of seven years in prison.
