Fired University of Iowa volleyball coach Bond Shymansky had shed more light on what led to his dismissal.

Shymansky’s firing was officially announced by the UI on Wednesday, although Pat Harty from allhawkeyes.com first reported it weeks ago. In a Thursday statement issued by Shymansky’s legal firm, Hartung Schroeder, Shymansky says he acted with compassion when he advanced funds to a recruit who incurred unexpected expenses in 2017.  Shymansky elaborated that the player came to Iowa City expecting a full scholarship, and when that situation changed, she had nowhere else to turn and he helped her pay her rent.

Shymansky went on to apologize to the Hawkeye community, adding he expects big things from new Iowa interim coach Vicki Brown. Brown was named interim head coach on May 20th, and will remain in that role for the 2019-20 volleyball season. Brown was named associate head coach in April of 2017.

Shymansky admitted to knowing he committed an NCAA violation, and says he apologizes and plans to stay in the Iowa City area.
