A Grinnell Iowa man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase through Iowa City Tuesday night.
Arrest reports indicate that 36-year-old Jeremy Bruce of 3rd Avenue was eluding law enforcement when he was stopped on suspicion of being wanted by police. He then fled fully marked officers in his Volkswagen Jetta.
During the course of the pursuit, police allege that Bruce blew through several stop signs, crossed the center line and drove down the center of the road several times, and drifted through several curves at a high rate of speed.
A check of Bruce’s record shows his driving status as suspended. A drug recognition expert determined Bruce was under the influence of meth and marijuana, which he allegedly admitted to. A subsequent search of the vehicle found several syringes.
Bruce was taken into custody and charged with Eluding, operating while under the influence first offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as failure to obey traffic signals, driving while suspended, failure to obey stop signs, and reckless driving. He could be sentenced to over six years in prison if convicted on all counts.
He’s also set for trial on car burglary and carrying weapons charges in Jasper County from 2018. A pre-trial conference has been set for July 10th with the trial date of July 29th.
