An Iowa City woman was taken into custody after it was discovered she forged two payroll checks and cashed them.
Authorities say that between December 6th and 12th last year, 22-year-old Jade Thornton of Bartelt Road used the check cashing service at the Acapulco Mexican Bakery on Keokuk Street to cash the checks, which belonged to Harold’s Chicken. The checks were in the amount of $725.50 and $925.00.
The checks were later returned by the bank after it was determined that they were forged and not written by the restaurant to Thornton.
Thornton was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison if convicted.
