A Coralville man is in custody after the alleged strong-armed robbery of a convenience store early Monday.
Arrest reports indicate that they were called to the Kum & Go in the 2800 block of Holiday Road at about 2:45am for reports of a robbery. A description of the culprit was radioed to officers, who were told that the man headed east after leaving the store.
An officer on duty came upon a man matching the description as he was cutting through the North Ridge Park tunnel. The man, identified as 31-year-old Duane Shepard of 10th Street, ran from the officer but was soon apprehended with a “significant amount” of cash on his person in a Kum & Go plastic bag.
Shepard told police that he was forced by four other people to go into the Kum & Go and pass a note to the clerk. Police allege Shepard knowingly threatened the clerk and put them in fear of immediate serious injury, and assisted in the commission of a theft.
Shepard was taken into custody and charged with 4th degree theft and 2nd degree burglary. If convicted on the charges, he could be sentenced to up to 11 years in prison. A preliminary hearing on the case will be held April 18th.
