Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been suspended for the team’s next two games after allegedly bawling out an official following the team’s loss at Ohio State.

Athletic director Gary Barta announced the suspension on Wednesday, one day after McCaffery allegedly used an expletive and called an official a cheater in the tunnel after the team lost 90-70 in Columbus, Ohio. He and his son – redshirt freshman point guard Connor – each received a technical foul during the game.

McCaffery will miss the Senior Day game against Rutgers on Saturday and at Wisconsin on March 7. As part of the suspension, the Big Ten Conference has also fined the athletic department $10,000 and issued a public reprimand.

In a statement, Barta called McCaffery’s comments “unacceptable” and says they “do not represent the values of the University of Iowa” or the athletic department.

McCaffery added in the statement that he is totally in agreement with the suspension, calling the comments “regretful.”

The two-game suspension means McCaffery will return to the bench prior to the end of the season, in time for the season finale at Nebraska on March 10.
