Body found in burned car identified

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office has identified the body of a man found in a burned vehicle in rural Johnson County.
The victim is identified as 85-year-old Gerald Maye. An autopsy performed at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics did not determine a cause of death, but the sheriff’s office says it is not considered suspicious.
Maye’s body was found after emergency personnel were called to a vehicle fire at 2909 540th Street Southwest – a few miles north of Kalona and Riverside – about 12:40 Friday afternoon. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, Maye’s body was found inside the vehicle.
The incident remains under investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and the Johnson County Medical Examiner with assistance from the State Fire Marshall.
