Closing arguments are scheduled at the trial of a University of Iowa researcher who claims a nonprofit group that manages the school's intellectual property unfairly denied him the chance to profit from potential arthritis treatments he discovered.
After a week of testimony, closing arguments are scheduled for this morning at the Johnson County courthouse in the case brought by medical school professor Donald Macfarlane against the UI Research Foundation.
Macfarlane claims the foundation managed the patents on his discoveries in a way that effectively shut down his research and cut him out of a lucrative sale of the technology to a major drug company.
His attorney has said he plans to ask for $25 million in lost income, plus an unspecified amount for punitive damages.
The foundation has denied the allegations.
