A Coralville man reportedly was more than four times over the legal limit to drive when stopped for a traffic violation early Wednesday.

Officers stopped 29-year-old Hector Echevarria of 6th Street just before 2:30am near the intersection of 12th Avenue and 8th street for a traffic violation.  Upon contact, he had the odor of ingested alcohol along with bloodshot watery eyes.

After performing poorly on field tests, a PBT showed Echevarria’s breath-alcohol level at .359 percent. Medical experts say most people lose consciousness at levels of .300 percent and above, and may experience respiratory depression or respiratory arrest, leading to death.

Echevarria was charged with OWI first offense and could be sentenced to up to one year in jail if convicted.
