Results from the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll show the vast majority of Iowans oppose political violence over election results.

According to the poll, 86% of Iowans disagree that political violence is sometimes an acceptable response to an election result. That consists of 90% of Democrats, 85% of political independents and 83% of Republicans who responded to the survey.

In addition, 61% say they are confident that American democracy will hold. Slightly less than a quarter of Iowans, 24%, say they are mostly confident democracy will fail, and 8% are very confident it will fail.

President Joe Biden is focusing his campaign as a referendum on democracy, accusing former president Trump of having a disregard for the Constitution. Trump has said that if he loses the 2024 election, the United States won’t be a country anymore.
