A local Amazon driver accused of stealing over 200 packages intended for customers has agreed to a plea deal.

37-year-old Matthew Pierce of South First Avenue worked for the company last year. Over the course of a few months, company officials say he failed to deliver the packages  and marked them all as lost.

GPS data allegedly determined that Pierce did not go to the location of some of the deliveries.

When confronted in November, he reportedly admitted to stealing some of the packages and either trading them for narcotics or giving them out as gifts. Some of the stolen packages were allegedly recovered at Pierce’s Iowa City residence.

The value of the stolen merchandise exceeded $6300.

Pierce was originally charged with 2nd degree theft, a Class C Felony punishable by a prison sentence of up to five years. On Friday, he pleaded guilty to a lesser 3rd degree Theft charge. He was sentenced to a year of supervised probation and restitution. He could still get a two year jail sentence if he violates terms of the plea deal.
