An Iowa City man pulled over for an equipment violation reportedly left the scene and led authorities on a high-speed chase.

21-year-old Alexander White of Wylde Green Road was headed northbound on Highway 218 just before 3am Monday at the 93 mile marker when he was stopped. Another vehicle pulled over not involved in the incident, and the trooper advised White to sit tight while he sent the other vehicle on its way.

While speaking with  the driver of the other vehicle, White allegedly fled from the traffic stop, and a pursuit ensued.  Lights and siren were deployed, and White reportedly shut off all the lights on his vehicle shortly afterwards.  He continued northbound and took the Eastbound Interstate 80 exit.  The trooper reported being unable to catch White’s vehicle despite reaching speeds of over 120 miles per hour.

White took the exit at mile marker 240 and reportedly spun out and came to a stop at the bottom of the ramp. He was called out of the vehicle and was placed under arrest.

White allegedly had the odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, and two baggies of marijuana were reportedly found in his vehicle.  A PBT showed White’s BAC at .164 percent.

White faces charges of OWI first offense, Eluding, and Marijuana possession. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to up to seven years in prison.
