An Iowa City man faces multiple charges after being arrested for assaulting his wife.

According to the arrest report, 43-year-old Sapo Munga of Beach View Drive was taken into custody Wednesday for Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, two counts of Harassment, and Child Endangerment. Later that day, an investigator talked to Munga’s wife about prior incidents.

She outlined multiple incidents of domestic assault, including physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Two recent incidents were described in detail. In March of 2023, Munga was allegedly intoxicated and chased his wife around the house, striking her repeatedly in front of their children. He also reportedly threatened to murder her numerous times.  The incident was corroborated by their teenaged children.

In September, Munga reportedly was intoxicated and assaulted his wife after she returned from a walk.  He again threatened to kill her and allegedly strangled her, causing difficulty in breathing. The woman was pregnant at the time, which Munga was aware of.  The woman reported the incident to family members the next day.

Munga’s wife alleges that he has threatened to murder her and their children numerous times in the past, causing them to be in fear of him.

With the charges facing Munga, he could be sentenced to up to 17 years in prison.  A no-contact order was issued .
