An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly beating a woman pregnant with their child.

According to the victim, 20-year-old Carl Marshall of Highway 1 West carried out the assault early Sunday morning at their shared residence. Over the course of about 90 minutes, Marshall allegedly continued to hit, kick, strangle, punch and bite the woman.  He also reportedly broke the woman’s IPad so she couldn’t call anyone to help her, and held her against her will.

Marshall was aware that the woman was 9 weeks pregnant with their second child. Their six-month old child was present during the alleged assault.

Marshall allegedly threatened to kill the woman, who stated that she was scared for her life and thought that she was going to die.  She had multiple wounds on her body and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police arrested Marshall Tuesday and charged him with Domestic Abuse Assault causing Injury, Domestic Assault Impeding Airflow, Domestic Assault on a Pregnant Person with intent to inflict Injury, False Imprisonment, and Child Endangerment.  He could be sentenced to a maximum 14 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

A no-contact order was issued by Judge Brandon Schrock, and bond was set at $20,000.
