A former UIHC resident is challenging the suspension of his medical license.

Iowa Capitol Dispatch reports the Iowa Board of Medicine announced in January it had issued an emergency order immediately suspending the license of 33-year-old Dr. Gabriel Hernandez Roman, formerly of Iowa City.

On February 15th, the board imposed a $7,500 civil penalty against Hernandez Roman and suspended his Iowa medical license indefinitely.

The board accused him of gaining access to medical records about women he allegedly had romantic and sexual relations with.

Another incident occurred in 2022 when Hernandez Roman shared a photo of a patient’s prolapsed bowel to a woman he was dating. He allegedly told an investigator that he shared the photo because he was competing in a “Puerto Rico’s Sexiest Doctor of the Year” contest and wanted to prove he was a physician. Hernandez Roman reportedly blamed his unprofessional behavior and poor judgment on cultural and language barriers, as well as his poor mental health.

The Board found his alibi “blatantly untruthful” and upheld the suspension.

Hernandez Roman’s court petition to reinstate his license claims the sanctions instead were the result of violating an internal educational dress code that had nothing to do with professional incompetency or unethical conduct.
