An Iowa City man has been sentenced after a stolen and loaded firearm in his possession caused the death of a three-year-old child.

KCJJ reported previously on the case of 34-year-old Chris Gordon. He was sleeping at a Boston Way apartment in Coralville in July 2022 when the child, Damaria Sanders, got out of bed, found the pistol and  fatally shot himself.

Gordon reportedly got up after hearing the gunshot, saw the child, grabbed the pistol and ran out of the apartment.

Gordon had a previous felony conviction from Illinois in 2014 and was therefore ineligible to possess weapons.

Last week, he was sentenced to 144 months in federal prison for being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm and Ammunition. KCRG TV reports Gordon will be required to serve three years of supervised release after completing his term. There is no parole in the federal system.
