A central Iowa man is accused of using a forged check to steal thousands of dollars from a victim in Iowa City.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says 59-year-old Michael Fahrney of Des Moines presented and deposited a forged check for $2,700 at a U.S. Bank branch in Des Moines on the morning of February 23rd. Investigators say the forged signature on the check was an “obvious” attempt to use the victim’s information to obtain funds. The address of the offense listed in the arrest report is on Dolphin Drive SE.

Fahrney was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 3:30 Wednesday afternoon and charged with Identity Theft Between $1,500 and $10,000. If convicted, he faces a maximum of five years in prison.
