The University of Iowa has temporarily downsized its proposed renovation project at Duane Banks Field.

The Gazette reports the proposal, going to the state Board of Regents next week, will ask for $5.5 million to build an over 2300-square foot standalone clubhouse next to the first base dugout.

An original proposal for the 50-year-old field would have included a larger press box, new seating bowl, updated entrance, renovated sprinkler system and expanded restrooms — outfitting it with Americans with Disabilities Act-complying ramps, seats, bathrooms and an elevator. The price tag was reported to be up to $20 million, but was revised in November to $27.4 million after the June 2023 construction start date was delayed.

Regent documents released Tuesday said “Due to funding and cost concerns that arose after the intended scope of work was designed, UI Athletics determined the best approach is to advance a smaller project now, and do further renovations in the future, when associated gift funding becomes available.”

The new construction timeline is set for this fall and complete by spring next year. Separate projects already have been okayed that will update the lights and the field turf.

The office of Strategic Communication says a new press box and upgraded fan amenities are still in the works, but currently in planning stages.
