A recent study by the University of Iowa College of Public Health showed an increased use of cannabis among adults aged 50 and older.
The Daily Iowan reports that the study, conducted by Professor Brian Kaske, found one in six middle-aged people are using the drug for medicinal purposes, and four out of five participants reported a positive attitude toward the drug.
Kaskie said many older adults experience diseases like cancer or glaucoma and use cannabis for pain management. He also found that some users took cannabis as an alternative to opioids.
The study also showed cannabis as a benefit to those near the end of their lives, as it relieves pain that opioids do without the person having a hard time communicating with their families.
Iowa only offers medical cannabis legally. 38 states have legalized cannabis for recreational or medical use.
