North Liberty Police say a man who accidentally shot himself in the leg was carrying the firearm illegally.
According to arrest reports, just after 3:00 on the morning of March 3rd 29-year-old Efrain Barajas Jr. accidentally shot himself while he was a passenger in a car driving near the intersection of Penn Street and Penn Court. The driver eventually pulled over on the southbound on-ramp from Interstate 380 to Forevergreen Road. Police investigating the scene say they found two socks rolled together in a nearby ditch. The socks reportedly contained eight grams of marijuana, and they matched the socks Barajas was wearing and a pair found inside his bag.
Because Barajas was allegedly carrying marijuana, he was unable to legally possess a firearm. He’s now charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons and Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted on both counts, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.
